The issues you're having can be solved with maps and cheating the money system.

The story deepens considerably in Shenmue II, it's really good. I definitely say you should press on if you loved Shenmue. L: Zoom R: Move - This is the default for Shenmue II, which is odd as the second option below are the ones that are the default for Shenmue Chapter 1: Yokosuka. This part will show you how you would like to have the L and R trigger buttons to work for. In just a few minutes you can get a few hundred dollars and then the hotel bill becomes trivial. You can't even look around with Ryo's head as in the default Look. When I do this, I always do it with one of the dice games and max out my bet. You can also cheat the money system completely by saving right in front of one of the gambling stalls and resetting if you lose. Slight spoiler here but you will soon get to a place where you can stay for free so the whole game isn't like that. It's possible you can stop paying altogether but I don't really know. There is also a complete overworld map that shows you the whole region, not just the smaller areas you load between.Īs for the hotel issue, I've always eventually paid the bill but he will let you slide for a day or two and maybe more. I've beaten the game a few times and I still would not play without the maps. If you haven't already, I highly recommend buying the $10 maps in every area you visit, this helps immensely. I actually like Shenmue II better but the community is split pretty evenly on this based on what I've read in forums over the years.
